ENDORSEMENTS
ALLIANCE
FOR JOBS AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH ENDORSES
LEE, GASCON AND CUNNIE IN NOVEMBER ELECTIONS
Coalition recognizes candidates'
success, issues recommendations on propositions
SAN FRANCISCO - Showing results speaks
volumes to members of the Alliance for Jobs and Sustainable Growth,
whose members today announced their endorsement of Ed Lee for
San Francisco mayor, George Gascón for district attorney
and Chris Cunnie for sheriff.
With a unique membership of San Francisco
unions, business and community organizations, the Alliance put
its support behind these candidates and noted not only their
experience, but also their specific achievements in traditionally
sticky situations.
"Creating consensus behind a pension
reform plan for city employees was a major achievement for Mayor
Lee," Vince Courtney, the Alliance's executive director,
said. "We've seen that Mayor Lee has successfully navigated
difficult waters including the pension plan and the city budget,
and we can build on those changes."
The Alliance also recognized results achieved
by Gascón and Cunnie. Gascón, for example has a
solid record of progressive reform while demonstrating he knows
as much as anyone about fighting crime. He is another consensus
builder who is endorsed by a wide range of supporters including
Matt Gonzales, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, the San Francisco
Police Officers Association, Senator Diane Feinstein, and Attorney
General Kamala Harris.
Cunnie's experience as a police officer,
Undersheriff to Mike Hennessey and Lead Investigator for the
San Francisco District Attorney has earned him endorsements from
Senator Diane Feinstein, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, Attorney
General Kamala Harris, Retired Appellate Court Judge Harry Low
and former Police Chief Heather Fong.
The Alliance also issued its recommendations
for propositions on the November ballot. They include:
- Yes on "A", which would provide general obligation bonds
to finance repairs, renovations and new construction of San Francisco
Unified School District structures. This measure is necessary
to complete the District's 10-year capital improvement program.
- Yes on "B", which would provide for a $248 million bond to
improve deteriorating city streets. Our City's roads desperately
need this investment.
- Yes on "C", which would increase employee pension contributions,
increase retirement ages, require employee contributions to the
Retiree Health Care Trust Fund and change the composition of
the Health Services System Board. It is widely recognized the
city's pension system needs attention and this measure was negotiated
by Mayor Lee.
- No on "D", a ballot measure that would reform the funding
of city employee pension and retiree healthcare that is sponsored
by Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who is running for Mayor.
- Yes on "E", which would allow voter-adopted initiative ordinances
and declarations of policy originating with the Mayor or Board
or Supervisors to be amended or repealed by the Board of Supervisors,
with certain conditions.
- Yes on "G", which would temporarily increase the sales tax
rate in San Francisco from 8.5% to 9% to fund public safety and
social programs in the face of reductions in state funding. The
increase would be repealed for five years if the state restores
recently expired sales taxes.
The Alliance for Jobs and Sustainable
Growth (Alliance) is a new alliance of labor unions, business
organizations and neighborhood groups focused on creating good-paying
jobs and sustainable economic growth that will benefit neighborhoods
and community groups in San Francisco. Growing our economy to
produce good jobs and revenue for the public sector is a necessity
if we are to reverse our current economic decline and improve
our quality of life.
